Pregnancy Safe Exercises

Pregnancy Safe Exercises: A Complete Guide by Rekha Sagar Fertility Centre, Karimnagar

The moment you see those two lines on a pregnancy test, everything changes, including how you think about fitness. At Rekha Sagar Fertility Centre, one of the questions our patients ask most often after a successful IVF or IUI treatment in Karimnagar is simple: can I still exercise, and if so, how?

The answer is almost always yes. Staying active during pregnancy is one of the best things you can do for your body and your baby, as long as you follow a few basic safety rules and check in with your gynecologist in Karimnagar before starting or changing any routine.

Why Exercise Matters During Pregnancy

According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), regular physical activity during pregnancy is linked to a lower risk of preterm birth, cesarean delivery, excessive weight gain, gestational diabetes, and pregnancy induced hypertension. It also helps with back pain, mood, sleep, and postpartum recovery.

For women who have conceived through fertility treatment, whether that is natural conception, IUI treatment, or IVF at our centre, a gentle and consistent exercise routine can make the rest of the pregnancy feel far more manageable.

General Safety Tips

Before starting any exercise plan, our fertility specialists in Karimnagar recommend the following:

  • Get clearance from your doctor, especially if you conceived through infertility treatment or have any existing health conditions.
  • Stay hydrated before, during, and after your workout.
  • Wear supportive clothing such as a good sports bra or a belly band.
  • Avoid overheating, particularly in the first trimester.
  • Avoid lying flat on your back for long periods, especially in the third trimester.
  • Skip contact sports and hot yoga altogether.

Cardio Through All Three Trimesters

Walking, swimming, gentle jogging, and stationary cycling are safe options through most of pregnancy. Most healthy women can aim for around 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity every week, unless your gynecologist advises otherwise.

First Trimester Exercises

The first three months bring a mix of excitement and uncertainty. As long as your pregnancy is not high risk, you can usually continue your regular workout routine at this stage.

A well rounded first trimester routine includes:

01. Pelvic Curl

Lie on your back with knees bent, feet flat. Slowly tuck your pelvis and lift your spine off the floor one vertebra at a time, then lower back down. Repeat 12 to 15 times.

02. Pelvic Brace

Lie on your back in a neutral spine position. Gently perform a Kegel contraction while drawing the lower abdominal muscles in. Hold for 3 to 5 seconds, 2 sets of 8 to 15 reps.

03. Kneeling Push Ups

On hands and knees, lower your chest toward the floor and press back up. Start with 6 to 10 reps and build up gradually.

04. Squats

Strengthen the quads, glutes, and hamstrings, which helps protect the lower back later in pregnancy. Aim for 2 sets of 15 to 20 reps.

05. Bicep Curls

A simple, low impact strength move that can continue safely through most of pregnancy.

Avoid high intensity interval training and any activity with a risk of falling or being hit, since the first trimester is not the time to test your limits.

Second Trimester Exercises

Many women say this is when they feel their best. As the uterus grows, though, balance shifts and some caution is needed.

Add variations such as narrow squats and wide stance squats, along with incline push ups for the chest and shoulders. This is also a good time to build a stretching habit that covers the hip flexors, quadriceps, lower back, and calves.

Hip Flexor Stretch

Kneel with one knee down and the other foot forward, then gently lunge forward until you feel a stretch. Hold for 30 seconds and repeat on both sides.

Side Lying Leg Lifts

Lie on your side and lift the top leg slowly to strengthen the hips and improve balance.

Mermaid Stretch

A gentle seated side stretch that relieves pressure on the ribs as the baby grows.

Avoid high impact moves involving jumping or running, and continue to avoid long periods lying flat on the back.

Third Trimester Exercises

As labour approaches, the focus shifts to mobility, gentle strength, and preparing the body for delivery. Good options include walking, swimming, prenatal yoga, Pilates, and pelvic floor exercises.

Diastasis Recti Correction: A supportive exercise using a rolled sheet across the abdomen while gently lifting the head and shoulders, useful for managing the natural separation of the abdominal muscles that happens late in pregnancy.

Other safe options at this stage include bodyweight or sumo squats with a wider stance, light shoulder presses, wall push ups, and modified planks.
