Intrauterine Insemination, or IUI, is one of the simplest and most commonly used fertility treatments. It involves placing a specially prepared, concentrated sample of motile sperm directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation, giving sperm a shorter, more direct path to the egg and improving the odds of natural fertilisation.
IUI is usually the first treatment our fertility specialists in Karimnagar recommend once medication alone or timed intercourse hasn't led to a pregnancy. It tends to work well for:
Before recommending IUI, we confirm a few essentials: that ovulation is happening (with or without medication), that the fallopian tubes are open, and that the sperm count falls within a workable range.
You'll typically be started on oral tablets and/or injectable medications from day 2 or 3 of your cycle, continuing for around 5 to 10 days. During this time, we track your progress with ultrasound scans every few days. Once the follicles reach the ideal size, an hCG trigger injection is given, and the insemination itself is scheduled roughly 36 hours later.
On the day of the procedure, your partner provides a fresh semen sample (or a previously frozen one, if arranged in advance), which our lab processes before it is gently placed into the uterus. You'll then continue supportive medication for about two weeks, after which a blood test confirms whether the cycle has been successful.
On average, IUI has a success rate of around 15% per cycle worldwide, and most pregnancies that do occur happen within the first three attempts. Because of this, we generally advise couples to try up to three IUI cycles before considering a move to IVF or ICSI.
IUI is a straightforward, low-risk procedure. Most patients simply rest for a short while afterwards and then resume their normal routine the same day. Mild spotting or cramping is common and settles quickly. In a small percentage of cases (around 5–10%), a twin pregnancy may occur. Rarely, the ovaries may respond more strongly than expected to medication, raising the risk of Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS), something your doctor will monitor closely and manage promptly if it arises.
IUI may be considered for women with irregular ovulation after identifying and addressing the underlying cause. Ovulation medicines and monitoring may be used to help determine the appropriate timing for insemination.
IUI is generally a simple and minimally invasive procedure. Some women may experience mild cramping or discomfort during or shortly after insemination, but it usually does not require anaesthesia.
A pregnancy test is generally performed around two weeks after the IUI procedure. Your fertility specialist will advise you on the appropriate date for testing based on your treatment cycle and medications.
Some women may experience mild cramping, spotting or temporary discomfort after IUI. If you experience severe pain, heavy bleeding or other concerning symptoms, contact your fertility care team promptly.
IUI is generally less invasive and involves fewer procedures than IVF, but the most appropriate treatment depends on the cause of infertility, age, fertility history and other factors. Your specialist can help you understand which option is suitable for you.
